Grave & Headstone Cleaning at St John’s Wood Church Grounds

Westminster · NW8 7PB · Council cemetery

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

St John’s Wood Church Grounds, by the Lord’s roundabout, is one of the very few burial grounds still standing within Westminster itself. Consecrated in 1814 and closed to burials in 1855, it became a public garden in 1886, and its surviving Victorian gravestones can show typical weathering, moss and staining. We carry out careful, stone-safe cleaning here, in keeping with the site’s historic character.

About St John’s Wood Church Grounds

St John’s Wood Church Grounds was bought by St Marylebone Vestry in 1807 and consecrated in 1814. It closed to burials in 1855 and was laid out as a public garden in 1886. Thought to contain around 50,000 graves, it is one of the very few burial grounds still standing physically within Westminster, with surviving legible gravestones transcribed in 1962.

Access: Managed by Westminster City Council as a public garden. A transcript of surviving legible gravestones, made in 1962, is held at Westminster City Archives, which can help identify individual graves among the roughly 50,000 thought to be here.
