Grave & Headstone Cleaning at St Pancras Old Church Churchyard (St Pancras Gardens)

Camden · NW1 1UL · Heritage cemetery

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

St Pancras Old Church churchyard, now St Pancras Gardens on Pancras Road, is a heritage burial ground where tombs survive in quantity alongside headstones cleared to the perimeter. The stone is weathered and blackened by city air. This is a conservation site rather than a routine clean: any work is gentle, stone-safe and subject to the consents that govern the gardens.

About St Pancras Old Church Churchyard (St Pancras Gardens)

The consecrated burial ground of the parishes of St Pancras Old Church and St Giles-in-the-Fields, this ground on Pancras Road closed under the Burial Acts of 1850 and reopened as public gardens in June 1877. Most headstones were cleared to the perimeter, but a number of tombs remain in situ, including Sir John Soane’s Grade I listed mausoleum and the Burdett-Coutts memorial sundial.

Access: Administered by the London Borough of Camden and on the Historic England Register of Parks and Gardens, so conservation consent governs work to any monument. Many headstones were moved to the perimeter long ago, so a surviving stone may not sit over its grave.

Permission: memorial work here is governed by London Borough of Camden. In practice the registered grave owner’s consent is what we ask for, and we work to the site’s own memorial rules — see their memorial guidance, or our guide to who needs permission to clean a grave.
