Grave & Headstone Cleaning at Old Mortlake Burial Ground

Richmond · SW14 8BP · Council cemetery · opened 1854

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

Old Mortlake Burial Ground on Avenue Gardens is a Richmond council ground established in 1854 and enlarged in 1877, generally understood to be closed to new plots though its status has been described inconsistently across sources. Its older memorials, including several notable monuments, benefit from gentle, stone-safe cleaning. Memorial Guardian London’s work here is careful and respectful, and this is a separate site from Mortlake Cemetery and Mortlake Crematorium.

About Old Mortlake Burial Ground

Old Mortlake Burial Ground on Avenue Gardens, Mortlake, was established in 1854 and enlarged in 1877. It holds 21 Commonwealth war graves and notable memorials, including those of Sir Edwin Chadwick, Charles Dickens Jr and Admiral Sir Erasmus Ommanney. It is closed to new burials, though its memorials continue to be tended and visited, and it is separate from both Mortlake Cemetery and Mortlake Crematorium.

Access: The ground is run by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Sources differ slightly on whether it still accepts burials in existing family graves, so it is worth checking directly with the council’s cemeteries team.

No, they are two different grounds. Old Mortlake Burial Ground, on Avenue Gardens, was established in 1854 and enlarged in 1877, and is run by Richmond council. Mortlake Cemetery, also known as Hammersmith New Cemetery, is a larger, later site on Clifford Avenue run by Hammersmith & Fulham council. Both are also separate from Mortlake Crematorium, so it is worth checking exactly which one a grave belongs to.
