Mortlake Cemetery, also known as Hammersmith New Cemetery, sits on Clifford Avenue in Kew but is owned and run by Hammersmith & Fulham council rather than Richmond, where it is physically located. Opened in 1926, it has early-to-mid twentieth-century headstones and 109 Commonwealth war graves. Memorial Guardian London cleans memorials here by hand, using stone-safe methods, and this is a different site from Old Mortlake Burial Ground nearby.

About Mortlake Cemetery (Hammersmith New Cemetery)

Mortlake Cemetery opened in 1926 as Hammersmith New Cemetery, on Clifford Avenue and Lower Mortlake Road, Kew, after the borough’s older Margravine Cemetery filled up. It holds 109 Commonwealth war graves and a memorial to 77 cremated servicemen, along with the graves of Stephen Ward, Arthur Haynes, Carol White and WPC Jane Arbuthnot. It is a separate site from Old Mortlake Burial Ground and Mortlake Crematorium.

Access: The cemetery is owned and run by the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, even though it stands within Richmond. Sources give both TW9 and SW14 postcodes for its different entrances, so it helps to check which gate you mean.

Is Mortlake Cemetery the same as Old Mortlake Burial Ground?+

No, they are two separate sites. Mortlake Cemetery, also called Hammersmith New Cemetery, opened in 1926 on Clifford Avenue and Lower Mortlake Road and is run by Hammersmith & Fulham council. Old Mortlake Burial Ground, on Avenue Gardens, is an older ground established in 1854 and run by Richmond council. Both are also distinct from Mortlake Crematorium, so it is worth checking exactly which one a grave is in.
