Grave & Headstone Cleaning at Brady Street Cemetery

Tower Hamlets · E1 · Faith cemetery · opened 1761

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

Yes — memorial cleaning can be arranged at Brady Street Cemetery, the walled Jewish burial ground in Whitechapel used from 1761 to around 1858. Its historic stones often carry over a century and a half of soot, moss and lichen from the surrounding city. Any work here is gentle and stone-safe, and visits must be pre-arranged with the United Synagogue, since the site is not open to the public.

About Brady Street Cemetery

Brady Street Cemetery, in Whitechapel, was opened in 1761 as the burial ground of the New Synagogue and later used by the Great Synagogue, closing to burials in 1857 or 1858. The four-acre walled site includes the raised ‘Strangers Mound’, historically used for unaffiliated burials. Owned by the United Synagogue, it is closed to new burials, but its memorials are still tended and can be visited by appointment.

Access: Owned and administered by the United Synagogue. The site is walled and only open by appointment, and a 1990 burial has legally protected it from redevelopment, so its historic layout remains intact.
