Grave & Headstone Cleaning at St George’s Gardens (St George in the East Churchyard)

Tower Hamlets · E1 0BH · Faith cemetery · opened 1829

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

St George’s Gardens in Shadwell is the former churchyard of Hawksmoor’s St George in the East, extended in 1829 and combined with a neighbouring Methodist burial ground before becoming a public garden in 1886. Its headstones were moved to the garden’s perimeter in the 1870s, where damp, moss and grime build up on this wall-set collection of stones. We carry out gentle, stone-safe cleaning of these memorials in keeping with the garden’s public setting.

About St George’s Gardens (St George in the East Churchyard)

St George’s Gardens is the former churchyard of Hawksmoor’s St George in the East, extended in 1829 and amalgamated in 1875 with the graveyard of St George’s Methodist Church, Cable Street. Laid out as a public garden in 1886 and relandscaped in 1996, it is closed to new burials. Its headstones, relocated to the garden’s perimeter in the 1870s, still form a low memorial wall along Cable Street.

Access: Managed as a public garden rather than a working churchyard; headstones were moved to the perimeter in the 1870s and now form a low memorial wall along the Cable Street approach, so cleaning treats this as a wall-set collection rather than standing graves.

In the 1870s the churchyard’s headstones were relocated to the garden’s perimeter, where they now form a low memorial wall along the Cable Street approach rather than standing over individual plots.
