Grave & Headstone Cleaning at Postman’s Park (St Botolph Aldersgate Burial Ground)

City of London · EC1A 7BT · Council cemetery · opened 1880

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

Postman’s Park, off King Edward Street in the City, was laid out in 1880 over the burial grounds of St Botolph’s Aldersgate and two neighbouring parishes. Its surviving headstones and chest tombs stand against the boundary walls, weathered and darkened by city air. Cleaning here is modest in scale, gentle and stone-safe, and arranged with the City of London Corporation first.

About Postman’s Park (St Botolph Aldersgate Burial Ground)

Postman’s Park opened in 1880 on the former churchyard and burial ground of St Botolph’s Aldersgate, and over the following twenty years absorbed the adjoining burial grounds of Christ Church Greyfriars and St Leonard, Foster Lane — three grounds in one. It is best known for G.F. Watts’s 1900 Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice, a loggia of ceramic tablets. No burials take place now; the gravestones remain.

Access: Maintained by the City of London Corporation as a public garden, so any memorial work needs the Corporation’s agreement. The ground level was raised when the park was made: surviving headstones and chest tombs are ranged against the boundary walls, not over graves.
