Grave & Headstone Cleaning at St Dunstan-in-the-East Church Garden

City of London · EC3R · Council cemetery

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

St Dunstan-in-the-East is a City of London public garden laid out within the ruins of a bombed Wren church, on the site of its former parish churchyard. Few, if any, upright grave memorials appear to survive here, so we would look before promising anything. Where old stone does remain, we clean it gently and only with the Corporation’s agreement.

About St Dunstan-in-the-East Church Garden

St Dunstan-in-the-East was a City parish church by Wren, bombed in 1941; the City of London Corporation laid the ruins out as a public garden in 1971. The late-seventeenth-century brick retaining wall, the gates and the Gothic railings to the churchyard are separately listed. No burials take place now, and the churchyard appears to have been largely cleared.

Access: Maintained by the City of London Corporation as a public garden, so any work would need the Corporation’s agreement; the walls, gates and railings are listed. It is not clear how many grave memorials, if any, remain — worth checking on site.
