About All Saints Churchyard, Poplar
All Saints Churchyard, also known as the St Matthias Old Church burial ground, lies between East India Dock Road, Newby Place and Bazeley Street in Poplar. It was used for burials from 1654 to 1855, and the ground was never consecrated. It is now a public garden managed by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, open from 8am to dusk, with a railed Garden of Remembrance. Chest tombs and headstones survive, arranged around the perimeter of the garden. This is a different site from Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park in Bow (E3), which we also cover — the two are easily confused by name.
Access: Managed by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets as a public garden rather than an active cemetery, open from 8am to dusk. Surviving chest tombs and headstones are arranged around the perimeter, and cleaning follows the council’s rules for this public garden.
