Grave & Headstone Cleaning at St George’s Gardens

Camden · WC1 · Heritage cemetery

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

St George’s Gardens on Handel Street in Bloomsbury is one of London’s earliest purpose-built detached burial grounds, now a public garden. Substantial chest tombs and headstones survive there in weathered, soot-darkened stone. It is a Historic England registered landscape, so any cleaning must be conservation-minded, stone-safe and agreed under the rules that govern the site.

About St George’s Gardens

The land at Handel Street was bought in 1713 as a joint detached burial ground for St George’s Bloomsbury and St George the Martyr Holborn, neither having room of its own — one of the earliest purpose-built burial grounds in London. Overcrowding closed it in 1855; it reopened as a public garden around 1885. No burials take place now, but the chest tombs and headstones remain, tended and visited.

Access: Managed by the London Borough of Camden as a public garden, and on Historic England’s register of parks and gardens — so conservation rules govern work to monuments, and consent may be needed. Access is on foot from Handel Street.

Permission: memorial work here is governed by London Borough of Camden. In practice the registered grave owner’s consent is what we ask for, and we work to the site’s own memorial rules — see their memorial guidance, or our guide to who needs permission to clean a grave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a grave cleaned at St George’s Gardens?+

Yes. We provide professional, stone-safe grave and headstone cleaning at St George’s Gardens, following the cemetery’s regulations. Just give us the section and grave reference and we’ll do the rest.

Do I need to be present?+

No. We only need the cemetery name and plot reference. We send before-and-after photographs and a short report when the work is done.

How much does grave cleaning at St George’s Gardens cost?+

A single headstone clean starts from £75 and a full grave clean from £85, depending on stone type, condition and access. We always provide a free, no-obligation quote first.

The gardens are a registered heritage landscape — does that stop a family tomb being cleaned?+

Not necessarily, but it changes how. St George’s Gardens is on Historic England’s register and is managed by Camden, so work to a chest tomb or headstone is treated as conservation rather than routine cleaning, and it needs the council’s agreement first. In practice that means gentle, reversible methods, no abrasives and no chemical treatments.
