Grave & Headstone Cleaning at Margravine Cemetery

Hammersmith & Fulham · W6 8HA · Council cemetery · opened 1868

Closed to new burials — but its memorials still stand, and families still visit. Older stone weathers hardest, so this is exactly the kind of ground that needs careful care.

Yes. Margravine Cemetery in Hammersmith, also known as Hammersmith Old Cemetery, is a Victorian ground closed to new burials and kept as a Garden of Rest. Its limestone, sandstone and marble memorials weather and gather algae, moss and traffic grime. We clean graves and headstones there with stone-safe methods, working to Hammersmith & Fulham’s rules for memorial work.

About Margravine Cemetery

Opened in 1868 and laid out by the local architect George Saunders with Gothic lodges and two Gothic chapels, Margravine closed for new burials in 1951, when its 16.5 acres were restored as a Garden of Rest. It is closed to burials but far from forgotten: memorials still stand throughout, the site is well used as a park, and families visit.

Access: Managed by the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham as a public open space, so memorial work follows council permission. Because it is a well-used park as much as a cemetery, work is arranged considerately around visitors, and demand here is maintenance rather than restoration.

Permission: memorial work here is governed by London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. In practice the registered grave owner’s consent is what we ask for, and we work to the site’s own memorial rules — see their memorial guidance, or our guide to who needs permission to clean a grave.

Margravine closed to burials in 1951 — are the graves still looked after?+

The cemetery stopped taking new burials in 1951 and was restored as a Garden of Rest, but the memorials still stand and families still visit. The council maintains the grounds; individual headstones remain the family’s responsibility, which is where we come in. Cleaning here is usually straightforward maintenance on Victorian stone rather than restoration.
