Winchmore Hill Friends Burial Ground, behind the Quaker meeting house on Church Hill, is closed to new burials but still cared for and visited. Its headstones are small, plain and uniform in the Quaker manner, set flush in grass, so they green over and sink into moss. Gentle, stone-safe cleaning suits them well, agreed with the meeting.
About Winchmore Hill Friends Burial Ground
The ground at 59 Church Hill was given by John Oakley in 1682 as a burial ground for Quakers, who had met in Winchmore Hill since 1662. The present meeting house of 1790 is Grade II listed, as is the boundary wall. Poor drainage brought burials to an end in 1980, but ashes are still scattered here and the ground is tended.
Access: Cared for by the Winchmore Hill Quaker Meeting, so any memorial work is agreed with the meeting rather than a council. The meeting house and boundary wall are listed, so we keep to gentle methods. The main burial area lies behind the building.
