East Greenwich Pleasaunce is a former naval burial ground in Greenwich, now laid out as a public park with its gravestones still standing in the central area. The stone there is old and often soft, carrying algae, moss and city soot. Any cleaning we do is gentle, stone-safe and conservation-minded, and follows the rules set by the council and the site’s Friends group.
About East Greenwich Pleasaunce
This was the burial ground of the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich, chosen in 1857, and in 1875 the remains of some 3,000 sailors were moved here. It is closed to new burials, but the gravestones remain in the central area and the memorials are still tended and visited by families.
Access: The site passed to the council in 1926 and is looked after by the Royal Borough of Greenwich with its Friends group. It is a public park with standing naval memorials, so work is conservation-sensitive. Entrances on Chevening Road and Halstow Road.
Permission: memorial work here is governed by the burial authority. In practice the registered grave owner’s consent is what we ask for, and we work to the site’s own memorial rules — see their memorial guidance, or our guide to who needs permission to clean a grave.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have a grave cleaned at East Greenwich Pleasaunce?+
Yes. We provide professional, stone-safe grave and headstone cleaning at East Greenwich Pleasaunce, following the cemetery’s regulations. Just give us the section and grave reference and we’ll do the rest.
Do I need to be present?+
No. We only need the cemetery name and plot reference. We send before-and-after photographs and a short report when the work is done.
How much does grave cleaning at East Greenwich Pleasaunce cost?+
A single headstone clean starts from £75 and a full grave clean from £85, depending on stone type, condition and access. We always provide a free, no-obligation quote first.
The Pleasaunce is a park now — are the old gravestones still cared for?+
Yes. When the ground was landscaped the railings went, but the gravestones stayed in the central area, alongside the 1875 Royal Hospital Cemetery memorial plaque and a later council memorial. Because this is standing naval memorial fabric in a public park, cleaning is kept gentle and conservation-minded, and we agree the approach with the council first.
