Chinese Ancestral Grave Care & Qingming in London

Qingming, or Tomb-Sweeping Day, is the time each spring when Chinese families clean their ancestors’ graves, make offerings and pay their respects. For the many London families who cannot travel to a relative’s grave — or whose family is buried overseas or across the country — we carry out this act of remembrance on your behalf.

During Qingming (Tomb-Sweeping Day, around 4 April), Chinese families clean and tend their ancestors’ graves as an act of filial piety. For families in London who cannot visit in person, we clean, weed, tidy and photograph the grave on your behalf — so your ancestors are honoured even when you are far away.

Burial & Memorial Customs

Tomb-Sweeping Day (Qingming)

Qingming falls around 4 April. The central duty is to clean the ancestor’s tomb — sweeping, weeding, washing the stone and repainting faded inscriptions — as an expression of filial piety. It is repeated in autumn at the Chung Yeung festival.

Offerings and remembrance

Families lay food and flowers, burn incense and joss paper, and bow before the memorial. We respectfully leave any offerings undisturbed and focus on cleaning and tidying the grave itself.

Caring from afar

Many UK Chinese families cannot return to a relative’s grave for Qingming. We offer a remote-family service: we clean and tend the grave, then send photographs so you know your duty of care has been fulfilled.
