Yes — memorial cleaning can be arranged at Rainham Jewish Cemetery, the Federation of Synagogues’ large burial ground on Upminster Road North in Rainham, not the neighbouring council Rainham Cemetery. Many of its older memorials, some dating from the 1930s, show weathering, soil staining and moss. Work is carried out with stone-safe methods and must be timed around the site’s Friday afternoon and Shabbat closures.
About Rainham Jewish Cemetery
Rainham Jewish Cemetery, on Upminster Road North, is the Federation of Synagogues’ principal east London cemetery — a separate ground from the nearby council-run Rainham Cemetery. The land was bought in 1936 and consecrated in February 1938, with capacity for 45,000 to 50,000 graves. It remained the Federation’s main active site until Edgware Federation Cemetery opened.
Access: Administered by the Federation of Synagogues Burial Society. The site closes at 1pm on Fridays and is shut on Shabbat and Yom Tov, so memorial work must be scheduled around these hours.

Is Rainham Jewish Cemetery the same as Rainham Cemetery nearby?+
No. Rainham Cemetery is the council-run ground managed by the London Borough of Havering, while Rainham Jewish Cemetery is a separate site on Upminster Road North belonging to the Federation of Synagogues, consecrated in 1938. Both sit along the same road but are administered entirely separately, so it is worth checking which cemetery — and which burial society — your family’s grave belongs to before visiting.
