Marble Headstone Cleaning in London

A marble memorial can yellow, grey and dull over the years, and it is the stone most easily ruined by well-meant cleaning. We treat marble with the patience it needs, so a loved one’s headstone is brightened safely rather than scoured. You do not need to be there; we send photographs of every step.

Fully Insured Stone-Safe Methods Before & After Photos BRAMM/NAMM Principles All 32 Boroughs

Marble headstone cleaning in London starts from £75. Because marble is soft and acid-sensitive, we use only plain water, soft brushes and, where growth is present, a conservation-grade pH-neutral biocide. We never use acid, bleach, wire brushes or pressure washers, which etch the stone permanently. Every clean is photographed before and after.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does marble need different cleaning from granite?+

It comes down to chemistry and hardness. Marble is calcium carbonate, soft and acid-sensitive, while granite is hard and acid-resistant. A method that is fine on glassy granite, such as firmer brushing or an acidic cleaner, will etch and dull marble permanently. We match the method to the stone, so marble is always cleaned the gentle, acid-free way.

My marble headstone has gone yellow and grey. Can you make it white again?+

Often we can recover a great deal of brightness, but honesty matters here. Surface grime, algae and a dulled skin clean up well; deep yellowing or a sugary, granular surface from decades of weathering is part of the stone itself and cannot be bleached out. Aggressive whitening damages marble, so we lift what is safe to lift and show you the realistic result first in a free quote.

Is it true you should never use acid or pressure washing on marble?+

Yes. Acids, including vinegar, brick acid and limescale removers, react with marble and dissolve the surface, leaving it pitted and dull. Pressure washing strips the soft outer layer and erodes fine lettering. Both cause irreversible damage. We use only water, soft brushes and a conservation-grade biocide.

How much does marble headstone cleaning cost in London?+

It starts from £75, depending on the size, condition and how much biological growth has taken hold. Older, heavily weathered marble takes more patient work than a recent stone. We always send a free, no-obligation written quote before any work begins.

Do I need to be at the cemetery while you clean it?+

No. We only need the cemetery name and the grave reference. We are fully insured, follow the cemetery’s regulations, and send you before-and-after photographs and a short note once the marble has been cleaned, so you can see the result wherever you are.
